Mentor

I have two decades of experience as an organic mentor of young people, early career researchers, and equity, diversity and inclusion professionals.

I take pride in the incredible achievements of my many mentees.

I am particularly enthusiastic about working with early career women-identified scholars and researchers of colour to find and build community and an intellectual home in academia.

My values as a mentor are:

Approachability

No matter the differences in our age or experience, I believe in meeting people where they are at, and building common ground. My aim is support, rather than judgment. Come as you are.

Patience

I set my mentoring pace and direction to match yours; I expect that you are in the driver’s seat and I will respond accordingly. But I am more than happy to help with navigation!

Transparency

I am open and honest about my aims and objectives as well as the kind of mentoring relationship I hope to establish; there won’t be any games or guessing, and you can count on me to be clear, upfront, and direct.

Trust

A mentoring relationship is only as strong as the trust we build. Establishing trust is a primary objective from which all other objectives can flow. I strive to create principled spaces for dialogue, and our communication will be confidential.

How might I mentor you?

Let me help you put your best foot forward, and make a positive difference to your project or organisation.

I can offer the following mentoring services alone or in combination, online or in-person depending on location:

  • input on CVs, resumes, cover letters, and other aspects of job, scholarship and fellowship applications and more
  • 1-2-1s, mini-lectures or small group workshops for upskilling in specific areas related to my academic expertise, or your academic or professional development
  • sound-boarding challenges in developing and implementing equ(al)ity, diversity, and inclusion principles within your organisation
  • text, chat or ‘phone a friend’ services for advice on issues related to academic employment such as doctoral research supervision (either supervisee or supervisor), scholar-activism, burnout, probation, promotions, grievances and disciplinaries. NB: I am not a doctor, lawyer or medical health professional, but I am a trained University and Colleges Union caseworker.
  • letters of reference (for people I know and have worked with in the past)
  • regular sharing of top tips, thoughts for the day, reading recommendations and more
  • Any combination of the above. Fee structure is flexible – get in touch to discuss!
